Annual Dinner 2020 – The Indo-Pacific, Crucible of the New World Order: Is Canada Ready?

Join us for an important, high-level discussion on Canada’s approach to the Indo-Pacific and how Canada could better engage with the region.

The fate of the world, the global balance of power, and the future of international institutions such as the WTO and the Law of the Sea are all being played out chiefly in the Indo-Pacific basin. The global centre of gravity has shifted. But where is Canada?

Despite its status as a world middle power and a Pacific nation, Canada forever punches well below its weight in terms of influence in this vital region. This is very much to Canada’s cost and to the immense disappointment and frustration of our friends and allies in the Indo-Pacific. They need our energy resources, our support in protecting security and freedom in the region, and our contribution to defending a rules-based liberal world order – one that enshrines the rule of law, free trade, and multilateral agreements, while constraining even its most powerful members.

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is devoting our biggest forum, MLI’s Annual Dinner, to a new national discussion on Canada’s place in the Indo-Pacific. Once again, MLI is bringing together the speakers you need to be hearing from, with new and important perspectives on the economic opportunities and strategic challenges facing Canada and its allies in the Indo-Pacific.

Join us for an evening of lively debate and discussion about whether Canada will engage successfully where it matters, or continue to watch from the sidelines.
